How do you read a list of cosmetic ingredients?

  • The INCI order

    The ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. The first ingredient is the one present in the greatest quantity in the formula.

  • Latin names vs. chemical names

    A Latin name (e.g. Helianthus annuus) refers to a minimally processed plant-based ingredient. A chemical name refers to a synthesised or purified compound.

  • The 1% rule

    Where the concentration is less than 1%, ingredients may be listed in any order. This is often where preservatives and fragrances are hidden.

  • Declared allergens

    The 26 regulated allergens appear at the end of the INCI list when their concentration exceeds a threshold defined by European regulations. They are excluded from our formulations.
